Pretty Slugs = Toxic

They don't break any speed records sliding along the ocean bottom. Their gills are large tufts, fully exposed on their backs. They also have no shells.
How is the species surviving?
Toxic secretions and stingers.
Some make their own toxins. Some eat toxic sponges and store the substance in their bodies. Others store nematocysts ingested from fire coral, anemones and hydroids. They are immune to these stings, and use them to their advantage.
To warn other creatures "I'm not tasty", they developed unique colouring. Predators learn quickly to avoid them. Nontoxic slugs and flatworms capable of mimicking copy this slugs colours and patterns to avoid being eaten.

Pity they cant see colour.
